Abstract

Architecture and Archeology are interested in the same subject: the city and the territory shape, taken as a whole, as a result of the constructive works that define and represent the culture of human society. This paper analyzes the genealogy of a very well known architectural typology of apartment blocks, case in linea, which have a relevant modern precedent in the Weissenhof Apartment House by Mies van del Rohe. This study demonstrates that the case in linea are not a product of modern architecture but are grounded in a longer and in-depth history which dates back to the 2nd century after Christ and to the emergence of typology medianum apartments at Ostia antica among the Roman insulae.
